Residence Permit in UK

If you want to live in the United Kingdom, you don't need to apply for a document to prove
you can live there unless you're from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) or
Switzerland, an extended family member of someone from the EEA or Switzerland.
A residence card usually lasts up to 5 years.
If your residence card expires before the new scheme is available, you should reapply for
another residence card.
To make a new card you’ll need to:

  • have a digital photo taken of your face
  • put your fingers on a glass screen to be scanned
  • give your signature
  • The process takes less than 5 minutes and doesn’t involve any ink or mess.

Keep in mind - If you already have a permanent residence document it won’t be valid after
the UK leaves the EU.
''On 29 March 2017, the government triggered Article 50, which began the formal process for
the UK to leave the EU on 29 March 2019.''
People who arrive at the UK by 29 March 2019, but won’t have been living here lawfully for
5 years when we leave the EU, will be able to apply to stay until they have reached the
5-year threshold. They can then also apply for settled status.

Here is an easy scheme:

Some countries have adopted biometric residence permits, which are cards including
embedded machine-readable information (documents whose content can be readily
processed by computers).
